Mk4 5 Speed Grinds Going Into First Gear

Always downshift sequentially if you lot're going to cease. I almost never downshift from 3rd or above to 1st.
Likewise this is my stance but yous should always accept the car in gear when moving - never coast in neutral. If you need to decelerate (not necessarily when approaching a stop), then downshift through the gears, and allow the engine decelerate the car.

i have had the aforementioned issue recently. i keep my car in gear more now, just the noise has made me worry if im messing up my gearbox. ive had that happen to me 2-3 times while owning my motorcar, and im happy to see its not just me.

On every automobile I've ever driven the transmission hasn't liked being shifted into outset gear while rolling unless you're rev matching.
I would coast up to the cease sign in gear and downshift into first when you're stopped. If you lot insist on rolling the sign then shift into showtime at your slowest point with a little rev match.

From my past experiences with MT, first gear is never synchrod, therefore requiring you to revmatch if you want to get into first.

Far too much benumbed going on here. Just depress the clutch at the last minute when coming to a stop. Finish coasting; it is a sign of an commuter who's not sympatico with their machine. My partner'due south always doing information technology and I have given upward telling her well-nigh information technology.
The car in the very low gears i.e. 2nd or 1st will hands drive similar an automobile and will clamber along at tickover revs without keeping on dipping the clutch.
I am of course referring to how a petrol engined auto performs - I don't know about oil burners.
Is there a negative consequence to coasting? Gas mileage is definitely improved if i accelerate upward to speed and then coast to neutral.
I do understand what you're proverb though, that you can hands declension in gear and the automobile is fine at low gears at depression speed.

How else would you arroyo a stop sign? Coasting in gear shuts off the injectors, increasing fuel mileage anyways.

Always downshift sequentially if you're going to terminate. I almost never downshift from tertiary or higher up to 1st.
Also this is my opinion just y'all should e'er have the car in gear when moving - never coast in neutral. If you lot need to decelerate (not necessarily when approaching a stop), then downshift through the gears, and let the engine decelerate the car.
This ^
I experienced this a few times likewise..
This might non be completely accurate as I'one thousand driving the car based on feel and not past what I come across in the cluster, but I typically put the clutch in around 6 mph from 2nd gear, if information technology'south a terminate sign I'd then downshift to 1st when I'one thousand nearly or completely stopped.. at a light I would put it in neutral effectually 5-vi mph and come to a cease. I know that's extra fuel wasted idling, but I as well alive in a hilly expanse and it's the nearly logical thing to practise nigh of the fourth dimension. Hope this helps!
Rev matching all your (sequential) shifts to slow the car is what's of import, whether or not I'm double clutching ever depends on the scenario. This car falls into the next gear at depression speeds, anyone else ordinarily sailing effectually with trivial input in 3rd gear at <xiv mph?

I almost never downshift into 1st in the offset place. When I dull to virtually 8 mph I downshift into 2nd. Anything slower I just come to a stop and start in 1st.

IMO, NO machine likes going into first while moving. Stop doing this and trouble solved.
If you demand to while rolling at a few MPH, drib it into 2d first..

hows are gearboxes when it comes to this? ive done this 3-4 times where i would hear the gritty/grinding noise for a split second, until i move the shifter a chip.probably once a calendar month type of thing. ive worried every time its happened, simply have come to a conclusion that every1 has feel this at one point or another... for expample, OP. every bit far every bit i understand, its the syncros that nosotros are really hearing. any comments/experiences?

E'er put it in second before kickoff. I even do this when the car is stopped as a force of habit. My MS3 wouldn't get into outset at ALL unless 2nd was selected prior.
